"EIN" US Tax Numbers for Canadians (LinkShare requirement for iTunes affiliation)?

I am a Canadian trying to set up a website with links to the iTunes Music Store - was hoping for affiliate commissions to cover the costs involved in maintaining the site. LinkShare tells me I need an "EIN" Taxpayer ID from the US, but the IRS website talks of an ITIN. Are these different things? Will an ITIN be acceptable for LinkShare? And how long does it take for this number to be generated?
